CEMETERY MAINTENANCE LABORER

Position Purpose:

As a maintenance laborer of the cemetery, the employee shall participate in the daily manual labor tasks of operating specific equipment and assisting in the construction, maintenance and repair of the cemetery grounds and buildings. These tasks shall be performed efficiently and in a safe manner. Assigned duties shall be given by the Superintendent or immediate Supervisor.

Supervision:
Supervision Scope: The employee shall perform routine functions under specific instructions from supervisor and with some independent judgment required as to methods or procedures.

Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of the Cemetery Superintendent and immediate Supervisors, referring questions to either of the above.

Supervision Given: None.

Job Environment:
Maintenance and some work shall be performed in a garage environment, some areas are heated while others are not. The majority of work performed shall take place outdoors, where the incumbent shall be exposed to all weather conditions which may include heat, cold, ice and snow and rain. At no time shall Safety for the individual ever be compromised. The incumbent shall be exposed to uneven terrain, may also be exposed to the hazards associated with working around heavy equipment, conditions may be moderately noisy and some times very loud, wind blown debris and sometimes certain chemical exposure. The Cemetery shall provide adequate Safety equipment and protective clothing, such as masks, goggles, ear protection and gloves and this Safety equipment must not be overlooked. On occasion, the employee may be required to attend to his duties on weekends or at times of emergencies.

The employee shall be trained and exposed to the use of walk-behind mowers, push mowers, weed whackers, hand tools, various hand power tools, blowers etc.

The employee shall frequently interact with funeral directors, vault personnel, florists, monument dealers and engravers, the general public, lot owners and bereaved families. Generally this communication shall be one on one so attention needs to be paid to politeness, the sensitivity of those being contacted and shall be conducted in a professional manner.

Errors in certain areas or work could result in lower standards of service and substandard cemetery conditions and operations.

Essential Functions:
The following is a list of functions and or duties but not limited to these functions of work performed by the employee. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

The employee shall participate in the raking of leaves, mowing of the grass, trimming shrubbery, cutting, picking up and chipping fallen limbs, planting of flowers, trees and shrubs, cleaning of all cemetery buildings, painting fences and buildings and other general cemetery maintenance.

Prepares the opening of graves, under the direction of the Superintendent or immediate Supervisor, for funerals. The grave will generally be opened by loader/backhoe but on occasion may be required to be opened by hand, requiring the removal of sod, loam and gravel to a specified depth. Set up of tent, lowering devise, greens and back filling of grave and removal of all equipment set up.

Informs Superintendent or immediate Supervisor of necessary equipment repairs, cemetery damage.

The incumbent shall perform similar or related work as required, directed or as situations dictate.

Recommended Minimum Requirements:

Education, Training and Experience
There are no particular minimum requirements for this position but any previous cemetery maintenance experience or landscaping experience shall be beneficial to the position and may be reflected in the rate of pay received.

Special Requirements
A valid state drivers license to operate any vehicle which may be driven. Possession of a valid Class III Hoisting license for operating tractor/loader.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Knowledge: Through training or from previous experience, the incumbent shall acquire the knowledge to operate machinery, Safety requirements and occupational hazards.

Ability: Ability to communicate clearly with either Superintendent or immediate Supervisors. Ability to work effectively under time constraints to meet deadlines. Ability to remain calm, concentrate and perform all responsibilities in a competent manner at all times.

Skills: Skills in operating above mentioned equipment.

Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Constant moderate physical effort is generally required in performing laboring functions. Employee is constantly required to walk, stand, sit, talk and hear. Employee must regularly lift or move objects weighing up to sixty pounds and occasionally lift or move objects weighing in excess of one hundred pounds. Employee must be able to access all levels of the cemetery and traverse uneven terrain. Vision and hearing must be at or correctable to normal ranges.
